For horror lovers, these films offer bone-chilling experiences that you won’t soon forget. These terrifying movies range from psychological thrillers to post-apocalyptic nightmares, with supernatural horrors like Hereditary and Alone and slasher classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The original one in the classic franchise came out in 1984 and terrorized viewers for nine films in a row. Don’t go to sleep after watching this one; you never know if ol’ Freddy will be making his way into your dreams with his razorblade fingers.
The Hills Have Eyes
Getting lost bang in the middle of a desert at night can be dangerous, as this movie taught us. Heed the warnings that creepy gas station owners give you; especially in the middle of nowhere. Unless you fancy becoming dinner to deformed, mutated, incest-loving cannibals. Also, if you decide to watch this one, watch the original 2003 version.
Wrong Turn
Another noteworthy slasher-horror franchise, there are seven movies in this one; the last one being in 2021. Like The Hills Have Eyes, this one too features monstrous cannibals who trap unsuspecting travelers and make a meal out of them. It is one of the goriest movies that this genre has ever produced. Again, guys, whatever you do, do not get lost in the middle of nowhere.
Hereditary
This movie has everything—a centuries-old spell book that summons the devil, a mother who belonged to a cult, and dead bodies hidden up in the attic. Go for it if you love a good little spook. Or if you dig movies about cults and Satanists.
It Follows
All kinds of spirits make the world. There are the ones that remain attached to specific places or objects, and there are the ones that love to throw things around and scare people in general. Then there’s this one that follows you around if you have sex with a certain person. Jay Height, the main character, is constantly tormented by an entity after having sex with her boyfriend, then she discovers that it is an STD (Sexually Transmitted Demon) that has been passed on to her.
Alone
This Thai movie is a landmark when it comes to modern horror. The story follows conjoined twins Pim and Ploy, who fall for the same man, Then Ploy dies and Pim marries the man who both sisters loved. Years later, the couple returns to Pim’s childhood home to discover a horrifying secret. A must-watch for horror and ghost lovers.
Orphan
This is a superbly made movie, centered around Esther, a small East European girl adopted from an orphanage by an American couple. Everything seems good at first, with Esther bonding with the couple’s two children, but then things take a turn for the sinister very soon. And as the tagline of the movie goes, there was something very, very wrong with Esther. Something that is bound to shock you and leave you open-mouthed.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Another classic in the slasher genre, this movie sees a group of five people come under attack by a chainsaw-wielding masked villain, known as Leatherface. This movie ticks all the boxes for a proper, conventional slasher, a remote, sleepy town, a a deserted house, abandoned neighborhoods, and the brooding, mysterious gas station owner.
A Quiet Place
One of the most-loved movies on Netflix, this one is about the survival strategies adopted by a family and their deaf daughter, after the world gets overrun and captured by sound-following monsters. Watch it with bated breath and prepare to get startled at every turn.
Bird Box
Similar to A Quiet Place, Bird Box takes place in the post-apocalyptic world. An unknown and unseen monster is killing people off by hypnotizing them and making them commit suicide. The main character is Malorie, a mother of two children. Her fight to save her family from the unseen terror forms the crux of the movie.
