Vince Vaughn in Psycho in 1998 was another example of casting that was questionable yet turned out to be brilliant. Comedy actor Vaughn was just not able to convey the sinister feel of the original character that was depicted in the cartoon. Many of the viewers of Hitchcock’s movie were left disappointed, for Vaughn did not show enough malevolence to portray the film’s main character.

Gangs of New York

Another controversy was Cameron Diaz portraying a prostitute, Jenny Everdeen, in The Gangs of New York (2002). Though the movie boasted a roster of Hollywood’s finest talents, critics and observers said that Diaz seemed lifeless and unnatural. It was felt that the character was not required, and some thought that the actress was given the role because she was a sex symbol.

Suicide Squad

A lot of fans expected great things from Jared Leto portraying The Joker in Suicide Squad (2016). Although the character has been portrayed by the great talents of Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, Leto’s take felt more superficial than substantial, which ultimately failed to capture the essence of the popular antagonist.

Tom Hanks, who is normally appreciated for his adaptability, was criticized for portraying Colonel Tom Parker in Elvis (2022). Observers claimed that Hanks failed to depict the controversial persona of Presley’s manager and that this was the actor’s worst performance since he could not infuse enough evil into the role.

The cast of Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004) is considered to be one of the worst in Hollywood. The film, as a whole, received substantial flak for its poor script and direction, and Berry’s casting did not help as she won the Razzie Award for Worst Actress.

Uma Thurman also did not fit the part of  My Super Ex-Girlfriend  (2006), which was another blow to the makers of the film. Despite her earlier powerful performances in  Pulp Fiction and  Kill Bill Thurman’s attempt at comedy portraying a scorned superhero in this film, it did not go well, as both her performance and the movie’s comedy did not click with the viewers.

Jack Reacher

Critics most often targeted Tom Cruise, playing Jack Reacher in the 2012 film adaptation of Lee Child’s books, primarily because of the physical differences. Cinematic subscribers to the books were disquieted by this, and this partly accounted for the disappointment, notwithstanding the commendable performance put up by Cruise.

Napoleon

The controversial casting decision was Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, which is set to be released in 2023. Some people said that Phoenix, who was at the time of shooting the movie, was too old to portray Napoleon, and therefore there was a misrepresentation of the vitality normally ascribed to Napoleon.

The Da Vinci Code

Tom Hanks’s choice of Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code (2006) was also unsatisfying for some viewers. Although the movie was commercially successful, many people thought that Hanks and an ungainly wig failed to bring to life the brilliant symbologist from Dan Brown’s popular novels.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

IMDb

Though the movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) is one of the many films in which George Lazenby portrayed James Bond, it is considered a mistake in casting the actor. Lazenby’s portrayal of Bond was deemed as not as suave or smooth as how Sean Connery portrayed the character, thus his short time as the famous spy.
